Netflix and Cinema Recommendations - The Killing, Suite Francaise, Fast & Furious 7

If you are looking for something to watch, here are some films and tv shows that I really do recommend.

On Netflix
The Killing - I just binge watched all 44 episodes and I loved it.  This is the US version of the Danish original.  It's dark, atmospheric, has a strong female lead and the relationship between the 2 main detectives (Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder played by Mirielle Enos and Joel Kinnaman respectively) just grows and grows over the 4 seasons.  The one liners that Holder constantly comes out with have to be some of the best on TV.  This is must watch tv and what binge watching was invented for.  I have to say when I got to the end I just wanted to rewatch it all again straightaway.  I can't wait to watch the Danish version to see how it compares.

In Your Eyes - check out my full review here of this sweet romance involving 2 completely different people who share a unique bond.

Cinema
Suite Francaise - starring Michelle Williams and Matthias Schoenaerts.  This film is based on a book written by Irene Nemirovsky who was arrested because she was Jewish and ultimately was killed at a concentration camp.  Set in France during the early occupation by the Germans during the 2nd world war, this tells the story of Lucille a young French woman whose husband is fighting in the war.  She lives with her disapproving mother-in-law (played by Kristin Scott-Thomas) who won't even let her play her beloved piano until her husband returns from the war.  Once the German soldiers take over the town, they are assigned an officer to live with them.  This is the story of how 2 people who should never be together ultimately find friendship, then love in the most unlikely situation.  The background of the German occupation, is played out alongside a tender love story which ultimately leads to a bittersweet ending. It's hard to imagine how a love story involving a Nazi soldier could be so appealing, but the chemistry between the 2 leads is wonderful and I wholeheartedly recommend this film.  I can't wait to read the book.

Fast & Furious 7 - This film comes with a lot of baggage due to one of the stars Paul Walker dying during the filming of this movie.  If you have watched the other 6 movies (of which the last one set in London was my absolute favourite), you get much of the same with the addition of Jason Statham as the bad guy.  You do spend a lot of the movie looking for the parts where Paul Walker is CGI'd, but I have to say that the filmmakers did a great job.  There is a fitting ending to Pauls character (Brian O'Conner) which in turn is a moving tribute to the man himself.  If you come out of the cinema dry eyed then your heart must be made of stone.  Who would have thought that a Fast & Furious movie could be so emotional.
